Raise your hand if you’re already daydreaming about a 2027 getaway. (Us too. It’s kind of an occupational hazard. We watch a new training and add a new destination to our travel bucket lists.) But in all honesty, daydreaming about 2027 trips now is good news: you’re right on time. For most trips, the sweet spot to start planning is 6 to 9 months out. Cruises, destination celebrations, holiday travel, and big group trips sometimes take a bit of extra planning, but either way, this fall is the perfect time to start dreaming out loud.
We hear it all the time: “Isn’t it way too early to book?” Here’s my honest take: waiting is what makes travel stressful. The best cabins, the biggest selection of hotels, and the sweetest prices tend to go to the people who plan early. So consider this your travel besties giving you a friendly nudge: let’s get some travel on your calendar!
Your 2021 Cheat Sheet
These are not definitive booking windows, but these are what we usually suggest when people ask how early they should start planning their next trip. It is also important to remember that we generally won’t tell you it is too early to plan. If you want more time to make monthly payments and you want to start planning now, reach out! We will let you know if it really is too early.
| Type of trip | Start planning | Why it matters |

| International vacation | 6 to 9 months out | Better flights, plus time to sort passports without the panic |
| Spring break or holiday travel | 6 to 9 months out | Everyone wants these dates, and prices know it |
| Theme park vacation | 4 to 6 months out, or as soon as your dates open | Parks release rooms and tickets in waves |
| Domestic getaway | 3 to 4 months out | Flexible, but early birds still get the best rooms |

The Trip-by-Trip Scoop
Cruises: earlier than you’d think
Cruise lines love to release itineraries way ahead of time, and the most-wanted cabins are usually the first to go. Booking early also gets you first dibs on dining times and any early-booking perks. If a 2027 cruise is on your wish list, let’s start planning now. (Cruises for 2028 have already started coming out as well. If you want early bird pricing nice and far in advance let us know!)
International trips: give yourself some breathing room
Starting 6 to 9 months out means more flight options, better choices for where you’ll stay, and plenty of time to sort out passports and entry requirements. Just remember, you can definitely start booking earlier than that, but the best hotels and cruises will start selling out if you wait to book until a few months before.
Holidays and spring break: the early bird gets the beach chair
Mark your calendars: in 2027, Easter falls on March 28, so spring break and Easter week will overlap for a lot of families. Thanksgiving is November 25, and Christmas is on a Saturday. These are the dates everyone wants, so the sooner the better. Note: The prices are usually higher at holiday times so please take that into account.
Theme parks: patience, then pounce
Theme parks march to the beat of their own drum. Many only release hotel rooms, tickets, and packages a few months at a time, so there’s often nothing to book a year out. Our move: pick your dates and budget and communicate with us about 6-9 months ahead. Then we keep an eye on the ticket and hotel release dates and we can pounce the moment they open up. Dining reservations and park extras open even closer to you trip, and we’ll keep track of those windows so you don’t have to set ten alarms.
Weddings, honeymoons, and group trips: the more, the merrier (and the earlier)
Any trip with a guest list needs a little extra planning, about 9 to 12 months (or even more). Venues, villas, and room blocks get scooped up quickly, and your guests will love you for giving them time to save up and request time off. Family reunions and girls’ trips? Same rule. More people + more time to plan = more fun!
Hint, Hint, Hint: Check Your Passport
Here’s a little insider secret: right now is one of the best times of year to apply for or renew a passport. The U.S. State Department says demand usually dips from October through December, then ramps up from late winter into summer. So the time is now! Beat the rush!!
Routine processing currently takes about 4 to 6 weeks, and expedited service about 2 to 3 weeks. Mailing can add up to two weeks on each end, so give yourself more time than you think you need.
Time for a quick passport check:
☐ Check the expiration date on every traveler’s passport, kids included
☐ Your passport should be valid for AT LEAST 6 months after your travel date. Some countries absolutely require this.
☐ Check for any deformities. If there is water damage, ripped pages, or major warping you may not be able to travel with your passport.
☐ Make sure you have blank pages. Honestly, most places aren’t doing stamps anymore, but you want to have room in case they do.
☐ Look up any visa or entry requirements for your destination. We help with this, but it doesn’t hurt to do some of your own research as well.
Why Planning Early Is the Best Way to Avoid Travel Stress
Planning early isn’t about being too type A. It’s about added options, peace of mind, and more fun and excitement.
- First pick of everything. Rooms, cabins, flights, tours, and experiences: you get the most options so you can have the good stuff.
- A happier wallet. Many bookings only need a deposit up front, so you can pay over time instead of all at once. The earlier you book the longer you have to pay for the trip and the cheaper it is = girl math.
- More time to get excited. Half the fun of a trip is the countdown. Why not stretch it out? Life always seems easier when there is something to look forward to on your calendar.
- Room for life to happen. Plans change. Booking early gives you time to adjust, and travel insurance can help protect your trip and your investment.
